Commissioned by DOSB and Athleten Deutschland, leading social research institute SINUS Institute published a new study on Monday. It reveals that while elite sports enjoy broad public approval in Germany, subtle shifts in public opinion are prompting deeper reflection on their purpose and goals.
Based on responses from over 1,500 participants, the survey highlights that German citizens’ expectations for sports extend far beyond the podium—they demand sports that embody values, strengthen cohesion, and deliver tangible social benefits.
Key findings include:
- 94% of respondents view public sports investment in local club youth programs and grassroots projects as “very important” or “quite important.”
- 94% emphasize that ethical behavior must be the foundation of any performance-related public policy.
- 91% stress sports’ role in strengthening social structures.
- 89% believe sports should be inclusive of vulnerable groups.
- 88% value athletes’ potential to serve as role models.
The results signal a growing desire to balance competitive success with social responsibility, suggesting Germany’s sports strategy may evolve to prioritize not just medals, but the broader societal value of sports.
